Film Review: “Home Sweet Home Alone” (2021)

In 1990, 20th Century Films (aka Fox) released “Home Alone” starring a youthful Macaulay Culkin as a kid who is accidentally left behind by his family for Christmas who has to defend himself against a pair of sleazy but dimwitted burglars. It, along with its sequel, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”, would go on to become classics that would constantly be rewatched by many during the holiday season, Including yours truly.

Considering how successful both films were, a string of awful sequels would follow. In 1997, we were greeted with the forgettable “Home Alone 3” that just so happened to star a young and (at the time) unknown Scarlett Johansson which between that and the 1994 dud, “North”, shows that even in Hollywood there’s nowhere to go but, up. In 2002, we bared witness to the direct-to-DVD dud, “Home Alone 4: Taking Back The House”, a film that you’ll more than likely find in the $5 Bargain Bin at your local Walmart. They even milked this franchise so dry, that eventually in 2012, we would get the made-for-TV film, “Home Alone: Holiday Heist”.

After “Holiday Heist”, it seemed that 20th Century finally took the hint and shut the coffin on the holiday cadaver that was the “Home Alone” franchise. However, that remained short-lived when in 2019, Disney announced that it would be doing what…
