Film Review: “Malignant” (2021)
Part X-Files Episode, Part Looney Tunes Cartoon
During the summer of 2005, My stepbrothers and I were up at midnight. We were flipping through the movie channels and soon we ended up landing on Encore with Freddy Vs. Jason. Ever since then, My horror phase kicked off. From Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees to Michael Meyers and the Scream movies, I was obsessed with slasher films despite being only 11 years old.
One of my favorite directors working today is James Wan. With films such as Insidious, The Conjuring, Aquaman, & Furious 7 under his belt, Wan has displayed an ample amount of range in his filmmaking career which is something is sadly a rare find. With his latest release, Malignant, James Wan returns to his roots as a horror director after helming two big-budget action blockbusters. With films such as Candyman & Get Out taking the horror genre by storm, How does Wan’s return to the genre stack up?
In Malignant, Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is haunted by visions of a ghastly figure named Gabriel. Madison soon starts to have visions of people falling victim to Gabriel’s murderous rampage. As she continues being haunted by Gabriel and his violent acts, Madison enlists the help of her sister and two detectives to find out why she is connected to Gabriel and his sadistic actions.
