Film Review: “Reminiscence” (2021)

Not necessarily the best journey to go on.

While I am willing to watch just about any film, I have my preferred sub-genres: Crime thrillers, Heist films, Space movies, and slasher horror films. When I first saw the trailer for Reminiscence, I was initially intrigued. Hugh Jackman is great in just about anything he does (Thanks to his background in stage plays) and while I jokingly referred to this film as a “Bioshock/Inception crossover” on Twitter, I really dug the style and the noir elements that I saw so far. So, how does it hold up? Does Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy have a strong hit on her hands? Let’s find out!

The Plot:

Private Investigator Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman) runs a business where people can live any memory of their choosing. After a mysterious chanteuse (Rebecca Ferguson) comes in for a reminiscence session, Nick and his friend and business partner, Emily (Thandiwe Newton), become wrapped up in a dangerous and violent conspiracy that involves drug dealers, crooked cops, and corrupt politicians.

Right off the bat, Reminiscence draws plenty of comparisons to many beloved films: Inception, Blade Runner, Westworld (coincidentally), and even The Maltese Falcon. Considering the narrative and the film’s noir aesthetic, It’s hard not to see why. I understand a…
