Film Review: “The Suicide Squad” (2021)

In August 2016, Warner Bros released Suicide Squad as part of the DC Extended Universe. Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad was plagued with production issues in the form of WB interfering with the final product, resulting in an abysmal film. The cast had little to no chemistry; the characters ranged from hollow (remember Slipknot, everybody? He likes to climb things!) to downright insufferable (Killer Croc’s BET obsession), and the visual effects were absolutely horrid. The film felt like a complete cop-out. Jared Leto’s Joker was the absolute worst (even though he was barely in the film, to begin with), and the film’s writing was flat-out atrocious. Sure, I dug the soundtrack, but 2016’s Suicide Squad is still considered the worst DCEU film and one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Flash forward five years where DC has scored a few good films like 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2019’s Shazam, as well as forgettable fare like 2020’s Birds of Prey; where does James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad stand?
