Lights, Camera, Safety: We Need To Talk About Our Sets.

The problem with the working conditions in Hollywood and what needs to change.

In the year 1993, Director Alex Proyas, the cast, crew, and the producers at Miramax Studios were filming the classic gothic revenge thriller, “The Crow”. The film’s main star, Brandon Lee, was a rising star at the time. One fateful day, in the middle of filming, a prop gun that was supposed to be handled with care, fired a faulty blank that struck and killed Lee.

Nearly 30 years after Brandon Lee’s tragic and untimely death, and yet, Hollywood still hasn’t learned their lesson. On October 21st, 2021, Alec Baldwin was filming the upcoming low-budget western film, “Rust”, in New Mexico. Baldwin was given a prop gun that was determined to be safe for usage. Alec then discharged the gun and accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured the film’s director, Joel Souza. In the wake of the tragic incident, many took to social media to both pay their respects to the late Halyna Hutchins and express their opinions on what should be done to prevent another incident like this from happening again.

However, this is not the only issue that the crew members of “Rust” dealt with onset. Furthermore, “Rust” is not the only film or television show in production plagued…
