Mortal Kombat Week: Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) Review
Not quite a flawless victory but, well done.
After two mid-90’s live-action iterations and a 2 season web series, Mortal Kombat has had an interesting journey in terms of visual media. The web series, “Mortal Kombat: Legacy”, was actually pretty decent. I only watched the first season so, I currently don’t have an opinion on the second but, I found season one to be competently made, and while I found Raiden’s episode to be the weakest, The rest of the season was good.
In January of 2020, Warner Bros animation announced “Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge” which would be the first animated film as well as the first Mortal Kombat movie to be rated R. This time, the film puts the iconic fan-favorite, Scorpion, front and center as the main character. The film opens up with Hanzo Hasashi’s origin story where Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei invade the Shirai Ryu compound, laying waste to Hanzo’s family and clan. After Sub-Zero kills Hanzo, he is awakened in the Netherrealm and is recruited by the sorcerer Quan Chi to participate in the Mortal Kombat Tournament. Also joining the tournament are Shaolin Monk Liu Kang, Special Forces Lieutenant Sonya Blade, & troubled A-List movie star Johnny Cage.
