The Fall of Ridley Scott: The real reasons why “The Last Duel” flopped

Also, why villainizing younger audiences doesn’t exactly help.

In 1979, a film about a space crew being stalked and murdered by an extraterrestrial creature made its way to theaters. That film, titled “Alien”, was not only a critical and financial success but also made director Ridley Scott a household name. The English-born filmmaker would go on to land more hits with “Blade Runner” in 1987 and the Academy Award-winning “Gladiator” in the year 2000, further cementing himself as the legend that he is today. However, in the recent years since 2012’s “Prometheus”, Ridley Scott’s film career seems to be struggling to stay afloat. His latest string of releases has either been a critical failure (“The Counselor”, 2013) or a financial letdown (“Alien: Covenant”, 2017).

Before we continue, I would like to add that I always hold Sir Ridley Scott in very high regard. He is along with Christopher Nolan, Nia DeCosta, and the late Wes Craven among my all-time favorite directors. I have complete and utter respect for the man because he has established a legacy behind the camera.
