Film Review: “Uncharted” (2022)

Flawed yet fun escapism.

It’s no secret that movies based on video games are often subjected to negative press. Ever since “Super Mario Bros” hit theaters nearly 30 years ago, video game adaptations have been subjected to scoffs from movie critics and groans from the average moviegoer. It’s absolute shame because I’ve played games that could make for compelling films. I would love to see a truly great
“Resident Evil”, “Mortal Kombat”, or “Silent Hill” movie. It just seems that for whatever reason be it a lack of studio funding or bad writing, Hollywood can’t seem to get it right. Hell, they even have difficulty straddling the line between fulfilling every single wish from fans of the games and pleasing general audiences.

Well, they actually did back in 2020 with “Sonic The Hedgehog”, a fun family movie with a surprising amount of heart. Aside from Sonic, I’ve been an apologist for last year’s “Mortal Kombat” reboot, “Rampage” from 2018, both the Angelina Jolie and 2018 “Tomb Raider” films and the 2006 adaptation of “Silent Hill”. My enjoyment of these films does have varying reasons be it pure campy fun, effective atmosphere, 90s/00s nostalgia, or better yet, a badass strong female lead. Either way, it's safe to say that studios’ lack of faith/funding plays a role in the notorious “game to movie curse”. I just really wish…
