No, “The Suicide Squad” is not a flop also, James Gunn has a point about watching movies at home
Not every film is a hit in theaters, and that is totally fine.
This past weekend (as of writing this), Warner Bros and DC’s latest film, The Suicide Squad, opened to a disappointing $26.5 million at the U.S. Box Office. Despite receiving heaps of critical praise (a fresh 91% on Rotten Tomatoes), overwhelming enthusiasm from audiences, and no other competing titles opening this weekend, all signs of the film’s ho-hum B.O. numbers pointed to three things:
- It is a sequel to its much-derided 2016 predecessor
- concerns over the COVID Delta variant (numbers have been rising)
- The Day & Date HBO Max streaming option
Given those three factors, many (including a writer at Forbes) were quick to call it a “flop” even though the pandemic (which has gone on far longer than a Lord of the Rings movie) is still keeping moviegoers at home and the fact that people at home can stream more than just reruns of FRIENDS. According to Samba TV, The Suicide Squad raked in 2.8 million views per household this past weekend, with 336,000 of those views taking place around its 7 pm Thursday night release. $26.5 million + 2.8 million household views on HBO Max does not equal a flop; It’s a moderately successful…
